Collecting well

Buying art directly from an artist or studio

Direct access can make collecting more personal and better informed. It does not remove the need for clear terms, sound provenance and an honest understanding of how the wider market works.

Does the gallery model still matter?

Yes. Serious galleries can develop artists’ careers, curate exhibitions, create scholarship, place work responsibly and manage complex logistics. Direct studio access is not an argument against galleries; it is a different route that may be appropriate for certain artists, works and collector relationships.

What social media changed

Digital platforms have made artists easier to discover and have allowed collectors to follow a practice as it develops. Discovery, however, is not the same as due diligence. A direct message or online following does not by itself establish authenticity, availability, provenance or a responsible route to purchase.

The introduction

ArtCap begins by understanding the collector’s interests, experience and intentions. Where there is a credible fit, we facilitate a direct conversation with the artist, studio or estate rather than presenting an anonymous online catalogue.

The studio conversation

The collector can discuss the body of work, current availability and the context of particular pieces. Depending on the studio, the conversation may also include unseen works, forthcoming projects, a studio visit or the possibility of a private commission. None of these should be assumed in advance.

What to establish before buying

Clarity matters. The collector should understand who is selling the work, the price and applicable taxes, the invoice and payment terms, authenticity or certification, condition, delivery, insurance and any installation requirements. Copyright normally remains with the artist unless explicitly agreed otherwise.

The transaction

If the collector proceeds, the agreement and payment are directly with the artist, studio or estate. ArtCap does not sell the work or receive the collector’s funds. We are solely the introducer and charge the collector no introduction fee.

The relationship after acquisition

A good acquisition can begin a longer conversation rather than end one. Continued access may include updates about new work or invitations connected with the artist’s practice, but it depends upon the studio, the nature of the relationship and the collector’s sustained engagement.

ArtCap Perspectives provides general cultural and market context, not financial, investment, tax or legal advice. The value of art can rise or fall, and a future sale may take time or may not be possible at the price originally paid.
